What to see in Aranjuez in one day
Aranjuez can be perfectly enjoyed in a single day. This is the itinerary we recommend so you don't miss the essentials of the Royal Site, combining the palace, the gardens and the old town.
1. The Royal Palace (morning)
Start with the palace interior, when there are fewer people. Don't miss the main staircase, the Throne Room, the spectacular Porcelain Room and the Ballroom. With a guided tour you understand each room better and skip the line.
2. Parterre Garden and Island Garden
On your way out, stroll through the Parterre (next to the facade) and cross to the Island Garden, surrounded by the Tagus and full of mythological fountains. A pleasant, shady walk.
3. Prince's Garden, Labourer's Cottage and Royal Barges Museum
Aranjuez's great garden deserves the second part of the morning or the afternoon. Inside are the Labourer's Cottage (an astonishingly luxurious little palace) and the Royal Barges Museum, with the court's boats. Check their hours as they have separate tickets.
4. Plaza de Parejas and old town
Back in the centre, pass the Plaza de Parejas, the church of San Antonio and the elegant 18th-century street grid. Aranjuez has one of the oldest bullrings in Spain and a lovely covered market.
5. Where to eat: strawberries, asparagus and pheasant
Aranjuez is famous for its strawberries and its asparagus. Many restaurants in the centre offer traditional dishes such as old-style pheasant or menus featuring these local products. The perfect finishing touch.
