A little history

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez began as the spring residence of the kings of Spain. Philip II commissioned the first designs in the 16th century from Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, but the palace we see today is mostly an 18th-century work, expanded by Ferdinand VI and Charles III. Its Baroque architecture and gardens on the banks of the Tagus made Aranjuez one of the court's most beloved Royal Sites.

In 2001, UNESCO declared the Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez a World Heritage Site, recognising the harmony between water, designed gardens and human endeavour. Today you can walk through the same decorated halls —such as the Porcelain Room or the Ballroom— and stroll the gardens that inspired Joaquín Rodrigo's famous Concierto de Aranjuez.
