Aranjuez and Chinchón in one day
Two gems of southern Madrid sitting close together: the majestic Royal Site of Aranjuez and the medieval village of Chinchón, home to one of the most beautiful main squares in Spain. They are just 28 km apart, so combining them in a single day (or spreading them over two) is a perfect idea. Here's how to do it.
How to get from Aranjuez to Chinchón
- By car: about 28 km, roughly 30 minutes via the M-305.
- By bus: line 430 (La Veloz) Aranjuez–Chinchón–Villarejo, with several departures per day; line 415 also runs the route.
- Suggested itinerary: morning in Aranjuez (palace + gardens), then lunch and the afternoon in Chinchón.
What to see in Chinchón
- Plaza Mayor, a medieval square (15th–16th century) with distinctive green wooden balconies — used for bullfights and markets.
- Church of Our Lady of the Asunción, which houses a painting by Goya (The Assumption of the Virgin).
- Castillo de los Condes (15th–16th century) and the village's scenic viewpoints.
- The local gastronomy and the famous Chinchón anise liqueur, plus the Parador hotel set in a former convent.
Tips
- Aranjuez palace is closed on Mondays: plan that day for Chinchón instead.
- If travelling by public transport, check the return bus timetable in advance.
- The Plaza Mayor in Chinchón is a great place to eat; book ahead in high season.
